It is a technology that uses microphones and speakers to reduce unwanted ambient sound. How ANC Works: Microphones and Speakers
Active noise cancellation relies on a simple principle: destructive interference. A tiny microphone on the outside of the earbud captures ambient noise. Transparency mode (also called hear-through or ambient mode) reverses the ANC process. Instead of canceling outside noise, the earbuds use their microphones to amplify ambient sounds and play them through the speakers. To get the best performance from ANC, ensure a proper ear tip seal. Clean the microphones regularly, as dirt or earwax can block them and reduce effectiveness. Use the companion app to update firmware, as manufacturers often improve ANC algorithms over time. Finally, consider your environment: ANC is ideal for consistent noise like airplane hum or office HVAC, but in a quiet room, you may not need it at all. Many earbuds allow you to toggle ANC on and off easily via touch controls or voice commands.
When to use ANC: on planes, trains, buses, in open offices, or any noisy environment where you want to focus. When not to use it: in situations where you need to hear your surroundings for safety, such as walking on a busy street or biking. That is when transparency mode or turning off ANC is recommended. Many earbuds also offer an adaptive mode that automatically switches between ANC and transparency based on your activity. For example, the AirPods Pro 2 can detect when you are walking and reduce ANC to let in more ambient sound. Some earbuds also have a conversation mode that pauses music and enables transparency when you start speaking. These features make ANC earbuds versatile for a wide range of daily scenarios.
