Active noise cancellation (ANC) has become a must-have feature in wireless earbuds, but many users don't fully understand how it works. Feedforward vs Feedback ANC: Key Differences
There are two primary ANC architectures, each with strengths and weaknesses.
Feedforward ANC
In feedforward ANC, the microphone is placed on the outside of the earbud, facing outward. It captures ambient noise before it enters the ear. The DSP creates the cancellation wave based on that external noise. Because the microphone is outside, it can anticipate noise and cancel it early. However, it may not perfectly account for how the noise changes as it passes through the earbud housing or ear tip seal. Feedforward is common in many mid-range and budget earbuds.
Feedback ANC
Feedback ANC uses a microphone inside the earbud, near the speaker driver. It measures the sound that actually reaches the ear canal, including any residual noise that passed through the passive seal. The DSP then generates a cancellation wave to reduce that remaining noise. Feedback ANC can correct for imperfect seals and adapt to how the earbud sits in your ear. However, it can sometimes create a slight oscillation or "howling" if the gain is too high.
Hybrid ANC
Most premium earbuds combine both feedforward and feedback microphones in a hybrid system. This gives the best of both worlds: feedforward anticipates external noise, and feedback cleans up what remains. Adaptive ANC: Why It Matters
Adaptive ANC automatically adjusts the level of noise cancellation based on your environment. When you sit in a silent library, they reduce it to avoid the pressure sensation known as "eardrum suck." Adaptive ANC uses the earbud's microphones to continuously sample ambient noise and tweak the cancellation filter in real time.
Some implementations, like Bose's CustomTune, also analyze the shape of your ear canal to optimize cancellation. Apple's AirPods Pro 2 use adaptive transparency mode, which blends ANC and pass-through audio dynamically.
