What Does a VPN Actually Hide?

A VPN hides your IP address and encrypts your traffic from your ISP and network owner, but not from sites you log into or the VPN company itself.

A VPN hides your IP address and encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN server. That stops your internet provider, network owner, or anyone sharing your Wi-Fi from seeing which sites you visit or reading your data. It does not hide your activity from websites you log into, from the VPN company itself, or make you anonymous online.

Why this happens

A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel from your device to a server run by the VPN provider. All your traffic goes through that tunnel, so anyone watching your local connection sees only scrambled data heading to the VPN server, not the sites beyond it.

Websites then see the VPN server's IP address instead of yours, which hides your real location and rough identity from them. What a VPN cannot hide includes anything you type into a site after logging in, the fact that you are using a VPN, and tracking tied to your account or browser fingerprint.

  • Hidden: your IP address, your physical location, and the site names or data from your ISP and local network.
  • Not hidden: your logged-in identity, cookies and browser fingerprint, and the traffic itself from the VPN provider.

Is this normal?

Yes. Using a VPN is legal and common in most countries for privacy, work access, and public Wi-Fi safety. It is also normal that a VPN protects only part of your privacy rather than all of it.

Does it cause any problems?

Sometimes. A VPN can slow your connection, and some banking, streaming, or shopping sites block or challenge VPN traffic. A free or untrustworthy VPN can also log and sell the very data you are trying to protect.

How to fix or check it

  1. Confirm the tunnel works by searching "what is my IP" before and after connecting. The IP should change to the VPN server's.
  2. Test for DNS or IP leaks using a leak-test site while connected. Your real IP and provider should not appear.
  3. On Windows or Mac, enable the VPN app's kill switch so traffic stops if the VPN drops.
  4. On Android, turn on "always-on VPN"; on iPhone, use the "connect on demand" setting so it does not silently disconnect.
  5. Read the provider's logging policy, and prefer one with an independent no-logs audit.
  6. Keep using HTTPS and strong passwords, since the VPN does not protect your logged-in accounts.
