Switch Types: The Heart of Your Keyboard
Switches determine how each key feels and sounds. There are three main types: linear, tactile, and clicky.
- Linear switches (e.g., Cherry MX Red, Gateron Red) have a smooth, consistent press with no bump or click. They are popular for gaming because they are fast and quiet. However, they lack tactile feedback, which can lead to typos for heavy typists.
- Tactile switches (e.g., Cherry MX Brown, Gateron Brown) have a noticeable bump at the actuation point, giving you feedback without a loud click. They are a great all-rounder for typing and gaming. Some find the bump too subtle.

Keyboard size affects desk space and functionality. Common form factors include:

- Tenkeyless (TKL or 80%): Removes the number pad but keeps arrow keys and function row. A popular compromise for gamers and typists who want a smaller footprint without losing navigation keys.

Keycap Materials: ABS vs PBT
Keycaps affect feel, sound, and durability. The two common materials are ABS and PBT.
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): Smooth and lightweight. They often feel softer and can develop a shiny, greasy look over time (called "shine"). Many stock keycaps are ABS. They are cheaper but less durable.
- PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate): Textured, more rigid, and resistant to shine. They feel slightly rougher and produce a deeper sound. PBT keycaps are more durable and often preferred by enthusiasts. They cost more but last longer.
For a first keyboard, PBT keycaps are a nice upgrade if within budget. However, many good boards come with ABS, and you can always replace keycaps later. Also consider the profile (shape): OEM and Cherry are common; SA and DSA are taller or uniform.
Connectivity and Backlighting
Connectivity: Wired keyboards (USB-C or USB-A) offer zero latency and no battery concerns. Wireless options use Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz RF. Bluetooth is convenient for multiple devices but can have slight input lag. 2.4 GHz with a dongle is more reliable for gaming. Many wireless boards also work wired. For first-time buyers, a wired board is simpler and cheaper. If you need wireless, look for low-latency options from reputable brands.
Backlighting: Backlighting helps in low light and adds style. Options include:
- Single color (white, blue, red): Simple and inexpensive. Good for visibility without distractions.
- RGB (per-key or zone): Customizable colors and effects. Fun but adds cost. Some software can be buggy. Not essential for performance.
- No backlighting: Saves money and battery. Fine if you type in well-lit areas.
Consider whether you need backlighting at all. Many budget boards skip it to keep prices low. If you want RGB, check that the software is compatible with your operating system.
