Why Does My Screen Have Dead Pixels?

A dead pixel is a single point on the screen that stays permanently black because the transistor that drives it has failed, so it never lights up. A stuck pixel is different: it stays fixed on one color such as red, green, blue, or white, and can sometimes be revived. Dead pixels are a panel fault and usually cannot be repaired at home, while stuck pixels sometimes clear.

  2. For a stuck pixel, run a pixel-fixing tool or video that rapidly cycles colors on that spot for several minutes to an hour, which can sometimes free it.
  3. As a last resort for a stuck pixel, gently press the exact spot with a soft cloth while the screen is on, using very light pressure. This carries some risk, so it is optional.
  4. Accept that a truly dead pixel, caused by a failed transistor, cannot be revived by software or pressure.
  5. Check the warranty. Many manufacturers replace a screen once the number of defective pixels passes their stated limit, so read the pixel policy and contact support if it qualifies.
  6. These methods apply to laptop and external monitor panels, and to both LCD and OLED screens, but never press hard on any screen.
