Why Does My Phone Charge Slower With a Case?

Your phone charges slower with a case because trapped heat makes it throttle charging, especially wireless. Learn when to remove the case and why.

Your phone usually charges slower with a case because the case traps heat, and phones automatically reduce charging speed when the battery gets warm to protect it. This mostly affects wireless charging, where a thick or metal-containing case also increases the distance and misaligns the charging coils. Wired charging is affected far less, mainly through heat rather than the case itself.

Why this happens

There are two separate effects, depending on how you charge.

With wireless charging, power passes through a coil in the charger to a coil in the phone. A thick case increases the gap between them, which lowers efficiency and generates more heat. Cases with metal plates for magnetic mounts can interfere further. The phone senses the extra heat and slows the charge.

With wired charging, the case does not sit between any electrical contacts, so the direct effect is small. However, a case that insulates the phone traps the heat produced during fast charging. When the battery warms up, the phone throttles the charging current to stay safe, which you notice as slower charging.

Is this normal?

Yes. Slower charging when the phone is warm is normal and intended. It is the phone protecting the battery, not a defect in the phone or the case.

Does it cause any problems?

The only real downside is longer charging time, mainly with wireless charging or during fast wired charging. It does not damage the phone, and keeping the battery cooler is actually good for its lifespan.

How to fix or check it

  1. Remove the case during wireless charging, especially if it is thick or contains metal, to improve alignment and reduce heat.
  2. For wired charging, remove the case only if the phone feels hot, since heat is the main cause of slowdown.
  3. Charge in a cool place out of direct sunlight so the phone does not throttle from ambient heat.
  4. Confirm your wireless charger and case thickness are compatible, as many pads work best with cases under a few millimeters thick.
  5. Use a charger and cable that match your phone's fast-charging standard so you start from the highest possible speed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take my case off to charge?

For wireless charging, taking off a thick or metal case helps noticeably. For wired charging, only remove it if the phone is getting hot.

Do all cases slow charging?

No. Thin plastic cases have little effect on wired charging. Thick, insulating, or metal-containing cases have the biggest impact, mostly on wireless charging.

Can a case cause my phone to overheat?

A case can trap heat and raise the temperature during charging or heavy use, which triggers throttling. It rarely causes dangerous overheating on its own.
