Why Does My Mouse Cursor Disappear?

Your mouse cursor disappears when a setting hides it, a graphics driver glitches, or it moves to another screen. Here is how to get the cursor back.

Your mouse cursor usually disappears because an app or setting hid it, a display or graphics driver glitched, or the pointer slid onto a second monitor. Common triggers are the "hide pointer while typing" option, full screen video, a graphics driver hiccup, or a wireless mouse losing its connection. Moving the mouse, pressing a key, or reconnecting the mouse normally brings it back.

Why this happens

  • Windows has a "Hide pointer while typing" setting that briefly hides the cursor as you type.
  • Full screen video, games, or presentations hide the cursor by design.
  • A graphics driver glitch stops the system from drawing the cursor, which is a very common cause.
  • The pointer moved onto a second monitor or just off the edge of the screen.
  • A wireless mouse dropped its connection or the battery is low.
  • Some laptops disable the touchpad with an Fn key combination.

Is this normal?

A momentary disappearance while typing or watching video is normal. A cursor that vanishes and stays gone points to a driver or connection issue.

Does it cause any problems?

There is no hardware damage, but you cannot navigate until it returns, and a driver rendering bug may keep recurring until it is fixed.

How to fix or check it

  1. Move the mouse across both monitors and press a key to try to locate the pointer.
  2. On a laptop, check for an Fn key with a touchpad icon that may have disabled the touchpad, and toggle it back on.
  3. On Windows, open Mouse settings, then Additional or Pointer Options, and turn off "Hide pointer while typing" if it bothers you.
  4. Update or roll back the graphics driver. To force a redraw, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer.
  5. On Mac, shake the mouse quickly to briefly enlarge the cursor and spot it, then check System Settings, Accessibility, Display for pointer size.
  6. For a wireless mouse, charge or replace the battery, reseat the USB receiver, or reconnect Bluetooth.
  7. Reboot to clear a temporary rendering glitch.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my cursor disappear only in a browser or video?

Many pages and video players hide the cursor during playback. Move the mouse or press Esc to bring it back.

My laptop touchpad cursor is gone, what do I check?

Check the Fn touchpad toggle key first, then the touchpad driver in Device Manager or System Settings.

Does a disappearing cursor mean my mouse is failing?

Usually not. It is most often a software or driver issue. Test the mouse on another computer to rule out hardware.
