Why Do I Keep Getting Logged Out of Websites?

You keep getting logged out of websites when your browser does not keep the login cookie. Learn the common causes and how to stay signed in for good.

You keep getting logged out of websites mainly because your browser is not keeping the login cookie that holds your session. Common causes are settings that clear cookies on exit, private or incognito mode, an extension that blocks cookies, an incorrect clock, or the site expiring old sessions. Fixing your cookie settings and correcting the system clock resolves most cases.

Why this happens

When you log in, a site stores a small session cookie in your browser to remember you. If that cookie is deleted, blocked, or rejected, the site treats you as a new visitor and asks you to log in again.

  • The browser is set to clear cookies every time you close it.
  • You are browsing in private or incognito mode, which forgets cookies when the window closes.
  • An ad-blocker, privacy extension, or strict tracking protection is blocking the login cookie.
  • The device clock is wrong, so the site thinks the session has already expired.
  • The site itself expires sessions after a period of inactivity for security.
  • You use the site across several devices or browsers, and logging in on one signs you out on another.

Is this normal?

Being logged out sometimes is normal, especially on banking sites that end sessions quickly for safety. Being logged out constantly, or every time you close a tab, is not normal and points to a cookie or clock issue.

Does it cause any problems?

It is mostly an inconvenience, not a danger. Repeated logins waste time and can be frustrating, but they do not harm your account. If anything, short sessions are safer on shared computers.

How to fix or check it

  1. Allow cookies. In Chrome and Edge, open Settings, Privacy, then the cookies section, and make sure cookies are allowed and not cleared on exit.
  2. Turn off clear cookies when you close the browser if it is on.
  3. Check Keep me signed in or Remember me when logging in.
  4. Avoid private or incognito mode for sites you want to stay signed in to.
  5. Whitelist the site in your ad-blocker or privacy extension, or turn the extension off to test.
  6. Correct the date and time. On Windows, Settings, Time and language, and set time automatically. On Mac, System Settings, General, Date and Time. On phones, enable automatic date and time.
  7. Update your browser, and try a different browser to see if the problem follows you.
  8. On iPhone Safari, make sure Block All Cookies is off under Settings, Safari.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one site log me out but others do not?

That site may have a short session timeout, or an extension may block only its cookie. Try allowing that site in your privacy tools and check Remember me when you sign in.

Can a wrong clock really log me out?

Yes. Sites use timestamps to validate sessions and security certificates. A clock that is off by too much can make cookies and certificates look invalid, forcing repeated logins.

Is being logged out a sign of hacking?

Usually not. It is almost always a cookie or setting issue. If you also see password-reset emails or unfamiliar activity, then change your password and review account security.
