Clearing the system cache deletes temporary files your phone stores to load apps and services faster. It does not delete your photos, accounts, messages, or apps. The system simply rebuilds those temporary files as you use the phone again. Clearing cache can fix slow performance, glitches after an update, and apps that misbehave, though the first launch afterward may be slightly slower.
Why this happens
Your phone saves cached data so it does not have to rebuild the same information every time. Over time this cache can grow large or become corrupted, especially after a system update, which leads to lag, crashes, or display glitches.
There are two kinds. App cache is the temporary data for a single app. System cache is the shared temporary data the operating system uses. Clearing either forces the phone to start fresh.
Is this normal?
Yes. Cached files build up on every phone and computer, and clearing them now and then is a normal maintenance step. It is safe to do.
Does it cause any problems?
Not usually. You may notice apps take a moment longer to open the first time, and you might have to sign in to a website again. No personal data or settings are lost.
How to fix or check it
- Android app cache: open Settings, tap Apps, choose an app, tap Storage, then tap Clear cache. This does not touch app data or logins.
- Android system cache (older phones): power off, hold the correct button combo (often Power plus Volume Up) to enter recovery mode, choose Wipe cache partition, then reboot. Many newer Android phones no longer have this partition, so use app-by-app cache clearing instead.
- iPhone: iOS manages system cache automatically and gives no manual button. To clear the Safari cache, go to Settings, Safari, then Clear History and Website Data.
- Offload an app on iPhone: Settings, General, iPhone Storage, tap the app, then Offload App to clear its cached files while keeping your documents and data.
- Restart the phone after clearing so it can rebuild caches cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Does clearing cache delete my photos or accounts?
No. Clearing cache removes only temporary files. Your photos, contacts, messages, and login sessions in most apps stay in place, though some websites may ask you to sign in again.
Will clearing cache speed up my phone?
Sometimes. If lag was caused by bloated or corrupted cache, it helps. If the phone is slow for other reasons, such as low storage or an aging battery, clearing cache alone will not fix it.
How often should I clear the cache?
There is no need to do it on a schedule. Clear it when a specific app misbehaves, after a buggy update, or when storage runs low. Constant clearing gives no benefit.
