What Happens If You Clear Cache?

Clearing cache deletes stored temporary files so apps and browsers reload fresh data. It frees space and fixes glitches without deleting passwords or files.

Clearing cache deletes the temporary files a browser or app has stored to load faster, such as images, scripts, and page data. You lose nothing important. Sites and apps simply rebuild those files the next time you open them, so the first load may be slightly slower. Your passwords, bookmarks, and personal files stay in place unless you also clear cookies or site data.

Why this happens

A cache is a store of temporary data that software keeps so it does not have to download or rebuild the same thing twice. Web browsers cache images, stylesheets, and scripts. Apps cache thumbnails, map tiles, and other data.

Over time this cache can grow large or hold an outdated copy of a file. Clearing it forces the program to fetch a current version, which is why it often fixes pages that look broken or apps that show stale content.

Is this normal?

Yes. Clearing cache is a routine, safe maintenance step and is one of the most common fixes for display glitches and loading problems.

Does it cause any problems?

Not usually. The only effect is that the next load is a little slower while the cache rebuilds, and you may need to sign in again on a site if you also cleared its cookies. Cache alone does not store passwords.

How to fix or check it

  1. Chrome or Edge (Windows and Mac): open Settings, go to Privacy and security, choose Clear browsing data, tick Cached images and files, then clear.
  2. Firefox: Settings, Privacy and Security, Cookies and Site Data, Clear Data, tick Cached Web Content.
  3. Safari (Mac): Safari menu, Settings, Advanced, enable Show Develop menu, then Develop, Empty Caches.
  4. Android app cache: Settings, Apps, pick the app, Storage and cache, Clear cache.
  5. iPhone: apps do not expose a cache button. For Safari use Settings, Safari, Clear History and Website Data, or offload the app under Settings, General, iPhone Storage.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing cache delete my passwords?

No. Saved passwords are stored separately. You only lose passwords if you also clear cookies, site data, or saved logins.

Will clearing cache speed up my device?

It can free storage and fix stale-data glitches, but it will not make a healthy device faster in general. The next load of each site or app is briefly slower.

How often should I clear cache?

Only when you have a problem such as a broken page, an outdated view, or low storage. There is no need to clear it on a schedule.
