What Does RAW File System Mean?

RAW file system means Windows can see the drive but cannot read its format because the file system is damaged. Learn how to recover data before you format it.

A RAW file system means Windows can detect the drive or partition but cannot recognize its file system (NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT). The structures that describe the file system are missing or damaged, so Windows labels it RAW and usually offers to format it. Your files may still be recoverable, so do not format the drive if you need the data.

Why this happens

  • The file system structures or partition table have become corrupted.
  • The drive was removed or lost power during a write.
  • Bad sectors have damaged critical file system areas.
  • Malware or a virus damaged the volume.
  • A format or partition operation was interrupted.
  • The drive is physically failing.

Is this normal?

No. RAW is an error state that signals corruption or damage, not a normal condition. A healthy drive reports a recognized file system.

Does it cause any problems?

Yes. The drive becomes inaccessible, Windows repeatedly asks to format it, and your data is at risk. Acting carefully now improves your chance of recovering files.

How to fix or check it

  1. Do not click Format if you want your data back.
  2. Try chkdsk in an admin Command Prompt (for example, chkdsk X: /f). Note that chkdsk often refuses RAW volumes with "not available for RAW drives." If so, move on.
  3. Run free recovery software such as TestDisk, PhotoRec, or Recuva to copy your files to another drive first.
  4. TestDisk can sometimes rebuild a damaged partition table or boot sector to make the drive readable again.
  5. Once your files are safely copied off, format the drive to a proper file system (NTFS for Windows, exFAT for cross-platform).
  6. Check the drive's health with a SMART tool; replace it if it is failing.
  7. On a Mac the drive may show as "unreadable"; use Disk Utility First Aid, recover data if needed, then Erase.
