Background activity means an app is doing work while you are not actively using it, such as checking for messages, syncing data, updating content, or tracking location. This keeps apps current and lets them send notifications, but it also uses battery, data, and memory. You can view and limit background activity for each app in your device settings.

Yes. Most apps use some background activity so that notifications and data stay up to date without you opening them first.

It can drain battery and use mobile data. Too many apps working in the background at once can also slow down older phones.

How to fix or check it

  1. On Android, open Settings, Apps, pick the app, then Battery or Mobile data, and restrict background usage.
  2. To see the biggest users on Android, go to Settings, Battery, Battery usage.
  3. On iPhone, open Settings, General, Background App Refresh to turn it off entirely or per app.
  4. To see per-app usage on iPhone, open Settings, Battery and compare background versus on-screen activity.
  5. On Windows, go to Settings, Apps, Installed apps, pick the app, Advanced options, and set its background permission.
  6. On Mac, open Activity Monitor to see which apps use CPU or energy in the background.
