Adaptive brightness is a phone feature that automatically adjusts your screen brightness to match the light around you. Using the built-in light sensor, it brightens the screen in sunlight and dims it in the dark. On Android it also learns from your manual adjustments over time. The goal is to keep the screen easy to see, reduce eye strain, and save battery.
Why this happens
Your phone has an ambient light sensor near the top of the screen. Adaptive brightness reads that sensor and changes the display to suit the conditions.
There are two parts to how it works:
- Reacting to light: it raises brightness in bright places and lowers it in dim ones.
- Learning your habits: on Android, if you keep setting the brightness a certain way in certain lighting, it gradually adapts to your preference. Apple's version, called Auto-Brightness, mainly reacts to light.
Is this normal?
Yes. It is on by default on most phones and is meant to run in the background. Your screen changing brightness on its own is the feature working, not a fault.
Does it cause any problems?
Most of the time it helps. Some people find the automatic changes distracting, or feel the screen goes too dim or too bright at times. If that bothers you, you can turn it off and set brightness manually, though the screen will no longer adjust on its own.
How to fix or check it
- On Android, open Settings, then Display, and toggle Adaptive brightness on or off.
- You can also open the brightness slider in Quick Settings and look for the auto or adaptive option beside it.
- On iPhone, the feature is called Auto-Brightness. Open Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, and toggle Auto-Brightness.
- If brightness feels wrong after turning it off, set the slider manually to a comfortable level.
- If adaptive brightness behaves oddly on Android, clear the data for Device Health Services, or turn the setting off and on again, to reset its learning.
- Keep the top of the screen clean, since a dirty or covered light sensor can throw off the readings.
