Noise is measured in decibels (dB). Most purifiers have multiple fan speeds. On low, they are nearly silent (around 20-30 dB), while high speed can reach 50-60 dB (comparable to a conversation). If you plan to use the purifier in a bedroom, check the noise rating on low. Some models have a sleep mode that dims lights and reduces fan speed to near-silent operation. Energy efficiency varies widely. Look for models that use less than 50 watts on low speed. Continuous operation can add to your electric bill, so consider an Energy Star certified model. Energy Star certification means the unit meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These models use less electricity, saving you money over time. Both certifications provide independent validation of performance and efficiency. Additionally, some purifiers are certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for low ozone emissions, which is important if you have respiratory conditions. When comparing models, check for these certifications to ensure you are getting a reliable and safe product.
Filter Replacement and Maintenance
Ongoing costs can add up. HEPA filters typically need replacement every 6 to 12 months, while carbon filters may need changing every 3 to 6 months. Some models have a single combined filter that includes both HEPA and carbon layers, simplifying replacement. Washable pre-filters can be cleaned every 2 to 4 weeks to maintain airflow. Always check the manufacturer's recommended schedule. Many brands offer subscription services that deliver filters automatically, often at a discount. Factor in filter costs when budgeting; a purifier with cheap replacement filters may save you money in the long run. Also consider the availability of filters: some less common brands may have hard-to-find replacements. Stick with well-known brands that have readily available filters.
